A CT scanner was once a luxury
only available to the teaching hospitals! Today
it is used in all acute hospitals and is essential
in the diagnosis of many different types of illnesses
and injuries. It is more sophisticated than the
traditional X-ray, displaying a much clearer image
of the area being examined. In view of this, more
and more scans are being requested, particularly
urgent cancer related scans. This means that the
less urgent and routine scans are not seen as quickly
as the radiologists would wish. Currently we scan
in the region of 1000 patients per month with many
having multiple areas of interest.
The current CT Scanner is one
of the busiest in the country and a second is desperately
needed.
