Legacy gifts are a vital source of income for our Charity. The generous donations received from our supporters enable us to plan for the future and ensure we are around in the future to continue to help our patients and make a real difference to the Royal United Hospital.
Making your will
Making a will helps you plan your finances and ensures that your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
Leaving us a gift in your will is very straightforward. One of your first steps will be to decide the type of gift you’d like to leave – residuary or pecuniary. A residuary legacy is when you ensure your loved ones are catered for first and then whatever is left (the residue) goes to charity.
A pecuniary legacy is a fixed amount of money, for example £5,000.
Updating your Will
If you have already made your will and are happy with it, adding your favourite charity couldn’t be easier – this can be done via a codicil. A codicil is a supplement to the will that can make changes or amends and allow additions to that will.
To help you make or update your will we have produced a useful guide, which is available to you free of charge. Please note that this is not a comprehensive guide and we would recommend that you seek the advice of your solicitor, who can ensure that your will is legally valid and that your wishes are carried out. If you would like help finding a solicitor then please visit the Law Society website.
If you decide to leave a gift to The Forever Friends Appeal, your solicitor will need our charity name, address and registered charity number. You may also find the following wording useful if you wish to leave a residuary legacy:
“ I give all (or a % share of*) the residue of my estate to The Forever Friends Appeal (RUH Charitable fund), Royal United Hospital, Combe Park, Bath, BA1 3NG. Registered charity number 1058323, for the Royal United Hospital for its general purposes (or specific area/ward*) and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a valid and appropriate form of discharge to my executors.”
