The new RUH Cancer Centre will maintain the Trust at the forefront of innovation in healthcare buildings, and its place at the leading edge of mainstream Cancer Care in hospitals of its kind.

To see how the Centre will be built causing minimal disruption to the ongoing services our patients require please our developing the Cancer Centre site page.

We need your help to provide this wonderful healing environment for our patients and their families.

Key facilities within the new Centre will include:

Main Oncology atrium entrance

The finished Centre will feature a stunning central Atrium area used to create light, space and a choice of waiting areas in calm surroundings.

Radiotherapy with CT Simulator

The resulting completed new building has to effectively ‘bridge’ the void between the modern ‘RUH Central’ and Linear Accelerator Bunkers (‘Linacs’ – used for Radiotherapy treatment) in which RUH has invested heavily in recent years.

Dedicated Outpatients & waiting areas

There will be a choice of waiting settings including cafes, open seating areas, and quiet, private areas. This will be enabled by pagers as well as personal calls for appointments. There will be specific provision made for teenagers and young adults within the overall spaces.

Nuclear Medicine

This department is currently situated far from the main cancer services in the existing RUH North. It will be moved to its new location in the the new centre to help improve the patient pathway, and will include the new Gamma-CT Scanner that was purchased from the fundraising from phase 1 of the Cancer Care campaign.

Cancer Support Centre

A dedicated Patient Support Centre within the new Cancer Centre. A place where patients can access support and advice away from the clinical areas. Staff will not use this space whilst in uniform. There will be a communal table area and tea and coffee facilities for patients to help themselves. This area will be inspired by the environment created in the Dyson Centre for parents and the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

Research & Education facilities

Clinical research and trials facilitated by a trials lab, quality seminar space, thoughtful presentation of research information, plus co-location of research functions.

Specialist Pharmacy will be in close proximity

Chemotherapy Suite

Day Case Unit

Ward area, including single room accommodation

Pain Clinic

Medical Physics

*Please note the actual layout, design and facilities are still to be confirmed and is subject to change.

Our aim is a Centre that is designed to facilitate the flow of our patients’ Cancer journey seamlessly; where each patient is treated as an individual with privacy and dignity respected as highly as the treatment itself; essentially a ‘compassionate’, soothing and healing building that emanates a feeling of well-being. It will welcome even the most reluctant of patients and provide nurturing care that maximises the impact of our clinical service – because it is our professional wish to provide the very best for our patients.
Dr Sarah Wexler, Consultant Haematologist, RUH
