A Bucking Bronco and Summer Suits

The small villageof Rode, found just off the Frome Roadtowards Trowbridge, held their first Charity Summer Ball on Saturday 7th July.

The Olympic themed night raised a fantastic £13,590 which will be shared with the RUH Cancer Care Campaign- building a new pioneering Cancer Centre at the RUH and the Village Sports Project.

Over 270 guests enjoyed their evening with a Bucking Bronco, Marco the Magician, Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Edwards and two of this year’s Olympic Beach Volleyball team. Guests dined with a delicious 3-course meal provided by ‘A Bit of A Do’ Catering, sipped beverages from a large ice sculpture and danced to the sounds of a 6-piece band. The fundraising raffle and auction included wonderful prizes such as; a villa in Menorca for a week, a Vivienne Westwood handbag, tickets to the Graham Norton show, a week in a villa in Marbella, a track day and much more- the lucky winners were thrilled with what they went home with.

Organiser of the Ball and RUH staff member, Kelly Jupp comments: “We are so pleased to be supporting the new Cancer Centre. Our committee wanted to support the RUH as it is our local hospital and we felt that it would be highly beneficial to help all those around us who have been or will be affected by cancer. We were overwhelmed by the support on the night and the amount raised- the evening was highly entertaining, very glamorous and a good night was had by all.”

As part of the Cancer Care Campaign the RUH is planning to build a pioneering Cancer Centre which builds on the holistic approach taken with the Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care and balances the clinical expertise of the hospital with the provision of a nurturing and therapeutic environment.

The Appeal has been asked to raise over £5m over the next 4 years towards the cost of the £20.5m new Cancer Centre at the RUH, and which is due to be completed by around 2017.

Zoe Tainton, Community Fundraiser at The Forever Friends Appeal comments: “We have been so very lucky to have had the support from Kelly and her Committee in Rode. This was there first time at organising a Ball and they have blown us away! So, we would like to give a huge thank you to all those that organised and attended the Rode Summer Ball- for helping us to raise awareness and for donating such a fantastic amount, well done to everyone!”

Royal High School helps to complete Gamma-CT Scanner Campaign

Year 12 girls from Royal High School have spent the last academic year working towards their £10 Challenge for Charity. Several teams of 47 girls were asked to use their strategic and entrepreneurship skills to make a profit from a mere £10. All together they raised a fantastic £1741.55 for The Forever Friends Appeal at the RUH and their Cancer Care Campaign– raising funds towards a Gamma-CT Scanner.

Since the cheque was presented to The Forever Friends Appeal on 4th July 2012, all funds needed for the High Sheriff’s Challenge have either been raised or pledged with thanks to all those that have supported. The Forever Friends Appeal can now announce that not only has the High Sheriff’s Challenge been completed, but also that the Gamma-CT Scanner has been ordered.

The fundraising activities carried out by different groups were creative to say the least, some groups baked cakes and others baked dog treats and sold them at local dog shows. A movie night was set up for the younger years and all the screaming fans of the heart-throbbing film Twilight went along. One group of girls spent a lot of time making hundreds of Christmas decorations and sold them at the Guildhall Christmas Market in 2011. Some girls put their gardening gloves on and hand-picked holly to make their Christmas wreaths and others stayed indoors to knit Christmas stockings. One career-driven student decided to take this opportunity to take advantage of her art skills and sold self-portraits to local families- a great skill to add to her CV!

Mary Corp, a 16 year old pupil says: “We had fun working together and were glad to be supporting such an amazing cause, winning chocolates at the end was just a bonus!”

This has been the first year the pupils of Royal High School have set this challenge and are already looking forward to next year’s activities.

Zoe Tainton from The Forever Friends Appeal comments: “The girls did an amazing job! The planning, risk-taking and strategic decisions involved are essential skills for any employee in the business world. It has been great that they have worked so well as a team and raised such a great amount for our Cancer Care Campaign- we are thrilled!”

Now that Phase One- raising £650,000 towards a new Gamma-CT Scanner has been completed, The Forever Friends Appeal would like to thank everyone who has so generously supported this first phase.

During his year as High Sheriff of Somerset, John Cullum was pleased to be instrumental in launching this campaign: “Match funding is a great incentive for those raising money and I was pleased to be part of it and to see such a positive result” said John.

The Radiologists; Martyn, Stewart & Richard are truly delighted and appreciative of those who held fundraising events, ran miles and everyone who has donated towards this piece of equipment. Stewart Redman, Consultant Radiologist said “This new state-of-the-art Gamma-CT Scanner will improve the way we can scan and diagnose patients with cancer and other life-threatening conditions. It will reduce the number of scans required and mean fewer visits for our patients too. We can’t wait until it is installed in the autumn – thank you all so much.”

Happy Couple win a £21k Wedding for Charity

Local wedding planner Kerry Heathcote of Snapdragon Weddings sold raffle tickets to hundreds of couples last year, with a chance to win a wedding and honeymoon worth over £21k. Through raffle ticket sales and a fundraising ball Snapdragon Weddings raised a fantastic £3,928, all of which was donated to The Forever Friends Appeal’s NICU ‘Space to Grow Campaign’. This Campaign funded 50% of The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care at the Royal United Hospital (RUH).

Every part of the wedding was donated by local companies and together they created a dream wedding for the lucky couple. The winners were announced at a Charity Ball held last October. Katie Mclean and Andrew Hurrell of Bradley Stoke, Bristol celebrated their wedding day on Sunday 17th June 2012 at Bailbrook House in Bath.

The Bride, Katie Mclean comments: “Andrew and I were absolutely over the moon to win such an amazing prize which has completely changed our lives. The icing on the cake was that the money raised is going to such a wonderful and special cause to help the smallest babies at the RUH.”

Beautiful invitations designed by Meticulous Ink set the scene for guests before the big day, when the couple exchanged rings by Nicholas Wylde during a civil ceremony and celebrated with family and friends on the lawn, indulging in bucks fizz and canapés. The reception room looked stunning, draped with a marquee effect lining and fairy light ceiling by Oasis Events.  Essential Events Hire provided beautiful décor including birdcage centrepieces set on mirror plates and teal chair sashes to tie in with Katie and Andrew’s colour scheme. Guests enjoyed a three-course wedding breakfast before being entertained by Tom Carpenter, who performed a selection of swing and jazz songs whilst they enjoyed coffee and tasted the wonderful three tier cake baked by Lemon Sky Cakes. The bride looked stunning in a strapless Maggie Sottero gown provided by The Clothes Horse Bath and with her hair and make-up done by Beau Papillon. She carried a beautiful bouquet of purple astrantia, roses, thistles and garden herbs among others, provided by Flowers by Passion. Her bridesmaids looked lovely in teal coloured tea-length dresses provided by Sposa Elegante and the men looked handsome in suits by Austin Reed. The lucky couple ended the celebrations in style by jetting off for a week’s honeymoon at Tregenna Castle Hotel in St. Ives.  Katie and Andrew’s day was beautifully captured by Kevin Mitchell Photography and White Villa Films, leaving them with memories to treasure forever.

Kerry Heathcote of Snapdragon Weddings comments: ““I chose to raise some money for new equipment for the NICU as my own little girl was premature and needed NICU care, so it’s something that is close to my heart.  I would like to thank all the suppliers who so kindly donated their time and services. I would also like to offer my congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Hurrell.  After working closely with Katie to plan their wedding day, it was fantastic to see them both looking so happy!”

Zoe Tainton of The Forever Friends Appeal says: “We are utterly grateful for all the efforts made by Kerry and everyone involved in creating the wedding. They all helped to achieve such a fantastic project. The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care has exceeded our expectations and is a wonderful model for future healthcare buildings.”

Staff at local Tesco Express stores takes to the saddle to raise money for the RUH

Just weeks after the announcement of their fundraising campaign to build a pioneering new Cancer Centre at Bath’s Royal United Hospital (RUH), The Forever Friends Appeal charity is thrilled to announce that Tesco will be supporting the campaign by helping to raise funds for wards and equipment within the hospital

The staff at local Tesco Express stores are embarking on a sponsored bike ride on Saturday 28th July, where they will be taking to their saddles and riding 90 miles to raise vital funds for us. Throughout the bike ride, they will be calling into Express stores along the way, so that their family, friends, colleagues and local communities can cheer them on.  There will also be lots of different sporting activities taking place in the stores, and all are welcome to come along and show support.

Local Tesco Express stores within the catchment area of the RUH have supported The Forever Friends Appeal charity with its most recent successful NICU ‘Space to Grow’ campaign, where they raised tens of thousands and had a special care room named in their honour. So the charity is thrilled that staff at the local stores have once again pledged their support.

Area Manager for Tesco Express, Nick Helps, comments: “I am delighted that Tesco Express stores are involved again with The Forever Friends Appeal. As a retailer in the local community, we are well aware of the outstanding contribution the Appeal’s fundraising activities have had on the improvement of the facilities at the RUH. Tesco Express stores in the area would like to continue this support as it benefits so many of our staff and customers’ families and it’s therefore a cause close to our hearts.”

The Forever Friends Appeal continues to raise funds for state-of-the-art equipment for all areas of the hospital (alongside its major campaign), under its recognised name and logo to ensure the best possible level of acute care to the 500,000 people in Bath, North East Somerset and West Wiltshire.  The RUH treats over 300,000 patients each year.

Mr Helps continues:  “The staff always show so much passion and energy taking part in these fund raising activities and the communities equally enjoy getting involved – it’s a fantastic way to help such a worthy charity that benefits so many people.  The staff and I are currently taking part in a training program so we are ready and fit for the challenge – it’ll be grueling, but it’s all for a good cause!  We’re hoping to raise as much money as possible for The Forever Friends Appeal, so if you see us and would like to lend your support, please text TEDS12 on 70070”.

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Kate Bruhl, comments:  “It’s wonderful to have such a well known retail company supporting us for the second year running. I am delighted to be working with them and will of course cheer their riders on throughout the 90 miles route. Ted and I will be coming along to most of the stores on Saturday 28th July so keep an eye out for us”

Local Solicitors sponsor Ted’s Big Day Out!

Just weeks after the announcement of their fundraising Campaign to build a pioneering new Cancer Centre at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, The Forever Friends Appeal charity are today launching the date and theme of their annual fundraising in October – Ted’s Big Day Out!  On Friday 19th October 2012, thousands of teddies will be given their annual outing and will be taken to work, school, wherever to help raise funds for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign.

Local Solicitors, Mogers, based on Queen Square Bath have supported The Forever Friends Appeal charity for many years.  The Appeal are now so pleased to welcome Mogers on board as the 2012 Ted’s Big Day Out! Sponsor.

Managing Partner of Mogers Solicitors, Steven Treharne, comments: “I am delighted that Mogers Solicitors is again involved with The Forever Friends Appeal. As a Bath centric firm we are well aware of the outstanding contribution the Appeal’s fundraising activates have had on the improvement of the facilities at the RUH. As a law firm, we aim to provide the highest quality legal advice and service to our clients in Bath and its environs”

If you live or work anywhere within Bath, North East Somerset and Wiltshire, the RUH is your local acute care hospital.  The RUH treats over 2000 new cancer patients every year and every day the disease indiscriminately alters people’s lives.  With your help, the RUH can build a sensational new Cancer Centre to help transform our cancer patients’ journey and experience.

Whilst the level of clinical skills offered by the medical team at RUH are amongst the best in the UK, the buildings for much of the existing cancer services date back to the early 1940’s when they were hurriedly constructed for WW11 service personnel.  The Forever Friends Appeal plan to raise over £5m over the next 4 years towards the cost of building a £20.5m pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH, which balances clinical expertise with the provision of a nurturing and therapeutic environment.  The new Cancer Centre will be a joint NHS / charitably funded project with the parties contributing 75 / 25 % respectively.

Mr Treharne continues: Cancer is a disease which touches everyone. The new development will be a centre of excellence for this area and will have a dramatic effect on those who are diagnosed; amongst them possibly our friends, families, our staff and our clients. “This project goes to the heart of our community focus and support for local charities and I am proud that Mogers can play its part.

You can take part in Ted’s Big Day Out! Wherever you are – at work, home or school. You can sign up with your friends and colleagues, or take part on your own – the opportunities are endless. Staff at Mogers are already preparing their outfits for the day as the Appeal announces the 2012 theme for the day – Fluorescent Friday.  Not only can you take your teddy bear out with you for the day, but everyone is also being encouraged to do something fluorescent to help support the fundraising.  Whether you wear full on fluorescent fancy dress or simply just a fluorescent flower in your hair, the Appeal hope that you will join in with your friends, family and colleagues and have some fun on Fluorescent Friday 19th October.

Events & Community Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Hones, comments:  “Having just announced our plans to build a new Cancer Centre here at the RUH, we are so keen to make Ted’s Big Day Out! – Our annual region-wide fundraising day – the biggest and best yet!  It’s is great to have Mogers on board with our activities and we hope that businesses and schools all across Bath, North East Somerset and Wiltshire will join in and help us raise as much as possible on this one day in October.  Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, so supporting Ted’s Big Day Out! is a great way for schools, businesses and all kinds of organisations to get involved with fundraising to help improve the Cancer Services at Bath’s RUH.  ”

Staff and volunteers at the Appeal team have already started to promote the fundraising day across the area.  So keep your eyes peeled for more information coming your way soon.  Visit the Ted’s Big Day Out! website  www.tedsbigdayout.co.uk to register online or call Ted’s hotline on 01225 825825.
