Local woman to walk over fire in memory of friend

Emma Smith, aged 25 has made the brave decision to take part in The Forever Friends Appeal’s Fire Walk in memory of her dear friend Nicola Robertson, who passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday 15th March 2013 aged 28, just 11 months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Emma, who lives in Chippenham, explains: “I first met Nic at work; she took me under her wing and we soon became good friends. Nic and her three children became a massive part of my life”.

Following Nic’s diagnosis in April 2011, both Nic and her mother Bev Viveash became loyal supporters of The Forever Friends Appeal, whose RUH Cancer Care Campaign is currently over half way to achieving its aim of raising £8.5 million, which will contribute vital funds to the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, whose staff provided care for Nic during her cancer treatment.

Emma says, “Nic was one of the bravest people I know and so to continue in her memory, I’m taking part in the Fire Walk to raise money for this worthy cause which will provide better facilities for cancer patients and their families at the RUH, providing a better future for others, as I know this is what Nic would have wanted”.

The Appeal’s Fire Walk takes place on Sunday 15th March in Alexandra Park, Bath, which will coincidently mark the second anniversary of Nic’s passing. Emma continues: “The date of the Fire Walk is significant and is what first drew the event to my attention. I have always wanted to take part in a Fire Walk and I know Nic would find it very amusing that I am raising funds in her memory by potentially burning my feet; this is the kind of friendship we had!”

The Forever Friends Appeal’s Fire Walk will take place on Sunday 15th March at 6pm in Bath’s Alexandra Park and is being organized by Time4Change and its founder Cliff Mann, the most experienced firewalking instructor in Europe. The entry fee for the event is £30 and all entrants are expected to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship towards the Cancer Care Campaign.

Events & Community Officer at the Appeal, Emily Lynch says: “We are so grateful to Emma for facing her fears in support of the Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. Taking part in a Fire Walk is a great way to challenge yourself, increase your confidence and overcome your fears while making a real difference at the Royal United Hospital. This is the first time in many years that the Appeal has organized a Fire Walk and as such, we’re encouraging all of our supporters to face their fears to raise money for what will be an exceptional new Cancer Centre at the RUH”.

If you would like to take part in the Fire Walk, there are still limited places left!  To sign up online, please visit our Fire Walk page or call 01225 821535 for more information.

Exciting new scheme launched for small businesses

The Forever Friends Appeal charity at the Royal United Hospital has launched a new and exciting opportunity for local businesses.  For just a £1000 donation to the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, companies can become  a member of The Brick Wall Club and have the chance to win an exclusive opportunity to name a room in the pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH.

This unique scheme is open only to the first 25 companies that join as members.  Once 25 companies are on board, the club doors will close and all members will be invited to a prestigious Announcement Event, where they will each be entered into a free draw.  One lucky member will be drawn at random and will win a room naming opportunity in the new RUH Cancer Centre.  Companies will therefore have a one in 25 chance of winning.   All 25 members will also be recognised with a lasting acknowledgement within the design of the new building.

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Common, comments:  “When a company raises £25,000 for the new Cancer Centre, we acknowledge their generous support by offering them a room naming opportunity in the new building.  This new Brick Wall Club therefore now gives smaller businesses the chance of winning a room naming opportunity for just £1000.  We want to give all the small businesses across our catchment area the opportunity to be part of something special!”

The Forever Friends Appeal are thrilled to welcome on board the very first member of The Brick Wall Club, Design Consultancy company, The Design Wing.  Company Director, Mark Thompson, comments:  “We have recently lost a very close colleague to cancer, so it is lovely to think that by joining The Brick Wall Club, The Design Wing will be helping future cancer patients at the RUH.  We are so pleased to be part of the Campaign to help transform Cancer Services for everyone in the hospital’s catchment area – and what a great opportunity for our small business to also be in with a chance of naming a room in the new Centre.”

Jo Common continues:  “This is the first time The Forever Friends Appeal has launched a scheme of this kind and we are really excited by the initial feedback we have had from local businesses. We are thrilled to welcome The Design Wing on board as our first member. If you want to find out more about how your business can become a member of our Brick Wall Club visit our Brick Wall Club page

The RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising £8.5million towards the build of an exceptional new Cancer Centre for cancer patients and their families.  Each year the RUH cares for 2,200 new patients with cancer from the hospital’s extensive catchment area.  The clinical care is amongst the best in the UK, but the cancer unit facilities are outdated and uncomfortable, and do not provide patients with the positive environment necessary to support the healing process.  The hospital’s vision is to build a Cancer Centre which will balance clinical expertise with the provision of a nurturing and therapeutic environment.

Local firm raises £50k towards RUH Cancer Centre

Excalibur Communications are bringing their 2014 year of fundraising to an end by announcing they have reached their target for The Forever Friends Appeal charity at the Royal United Hospital.  January last year saw the Swindon-based business mobile, IT and landline providers, announce The Forever Friends Appeal as their 2014 Charity of the Year, pledging to raise a total £50,000 towards the RUH Cancer Care Campaign to help build a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH.

On Thursday 29th January 2015, James Phipps, CEO of Excalibur Communications, presented a £50,000 cheque to Patrons of the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, Sir James and Lady Deirdre Dyson.  The cheque represented the grand total raised by Excalibur Communications last year. The year’s fundraising was kicked off in 2014 with an initial donation of £25,000 by Excalibur, with the final £25,000 raised through initiatives organized by the company. As requested by Excalibur, this donation will go towards the provision of facilities for teenagers and young adults in the new Cancer Centre.

Excalibur have received incredible support throughout 2014 from their staff, customers and partners in the bid to reach their £50k target.  Staff from the firm hosted a Charity Sporting Dinner last July, with guest speaker Gareth Thomas, a Day at Bath Races in September, followed by an attempt to break a world record for the largest ever Swiss Ball exercise class.  Excalibur’s CEO James Phipps comments: “We’ve had an extremely busy year raising our target amount for RUH and the enthusiasm and effort Excalibur staff and the local community have shown has been overwhelming. Committing to raising such a large amount was a big challenge but we pulled out all the stops and made sure we got there! I want to say a huge thank you to all the hundreds of people that gave their time and money in support of our pledge, we truly couldn’t have done it without you. A very special thanks goes to the Excalibur team too, I’m incredibly proud of you all.”

The £50,000 donation means that Excalibur will be recognised by the charity as a ‘Principal Corporate Partner’, and will receive a Forever Friends Appeal Principal Corporate Partnership plaque to display in their Swindon office.  In addition, the firm is thrilled that their support will be acknowledged with the naming of an area within the new Cancer Centre, associated with teenagers and young adults.

Head of Fundraising for The Forever Friends Appeal, Tim Hobbs, comments:  “Excalibur has been an incredible supporter of The Forever Friends Appeal throughout 2014.  They have achieved a tremendous target of £50k which will make a truly significant difference to the lives of our cancer patients at the RUH.  We would therefore like to say a heartfelt thank you to James and the whole Excalibur team for their passion for our cause and we are thrilled to welcome the company on board as Principal Corporate Partners.”
