Wiltshire company pledge ongoing support for RUH

Trowbridge based company, Platinum Vauxhall, have pledged their support to the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Appeal charity for another year.  For over ten years Platinum Group have kindly supplied the Bath based charity with a vehicle to use over the summer months in the lead up to their annual fundraising activities in October each year.  But this year the company have chosen to extend their generosity and loan the vehicle to the charity for a whole year.

The vehicle on loan this year is a snazzy Vauxhall Meriva which has been branded with brightly coloured graphics to promote the Appeal’s annual fundraising week in October – Ted’s Big Bake Off.

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Common comments:  “As our calendar of events throughout the year gets busier and busier we are finding that members of our team are so often out and about across the RUH catchment area – attending events, visiting companies, meeting with supporters.  We are therefore absolutely thrilled that Platinum Vauxhall have so kindly chosen to loan us a vehicle for use all year round!   It means we are always helping to spread the word about Ted’s Big Bake Off. This year the Vauxhall Meriva, which we nickname ‘Ted’s Truck’ has travelled all over Bath, North East Somerset and Wiltshire.   We have many exciting visits planned for the forthcoming months, so I would therefore like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to Platinum for their wonderful generosity.”

General Manager at Platinum Vauxhall, John Hathaway, comments:  ““Platinum Vauxhall are delighted to be able to support the RUH Forever Friends Appeal again this year. There are so many local people whose lives have benefited over the years from the tireless fundraising that the Forever Friends Appeal caries out. The new Cancer Centre at the RUH will be a fantastic facility for both patients and their families, and we are proud to be able to play our small part in it’s continued development.”

The Forever Friends Appeal is the main charity for the RUH and Ted’s Big Bake Off is the annual fundraising week for the hospital which takes place each October. Last year, thousands of people across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire took part in the event and raised over £20,000 to help transform care for patients and their families at the RUH. This year, Ted’s Big Bake Off, which is kindly sponsored by engineering consultancy company, BuroHappold Engineering, is taking place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st October 2016 and the Appeal are now inviting individuals, schools, businesses and community organisations to pre-heat their ovens, prepare their mixing bowls and get baking to support either the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, or a ward or department of their choice at the hospital. Whether it’s holding a bake sale or hosting a bake off competition at work, school or with friends and family, you can help raise some serious dough to help transform care for patients and their families.

The Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising a minimum of £8.5 million towards the cost of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH. The new Centre will transform RUH cancer services and provide the very best care for patients and their families at the hospital.

Whether you’re an individual, business, school or community organisation, getting involved in Ted’s Big Bake Off 2016 couldn’t be easier! Simply visit www.tedsbigbakeoff.com to register and get your oven mitts on your FREE baking pack with tips, tools and tasty ideas to really add the icing on the cake. RUH Make a Will Month

Members of the general public across the Royal United Hospital’s catchment area are being urged to plan for the future by making or updating their Wills. To encourage this, local Solicitors are donating their Will writing fees to the Royal United Hospital’s charity, The Forever Friends Appeal.

This year, solicitors collectively covering 26 offices across the region, have teamed up with The Forever Friends Appeal to support its annual ‘RUH Will Month’ initiative which runs throughout September.  They have agreed to generously donate their time and expertise for drawing up a professional Will for the general public who wish to have peace of mind, by putting their affairs in order.

To help raise as much money as possible during September, the participating solicitors will prepare and draw up a single standard Will at a specially reduced fee of £100 or two standard Mirror Wills for £150.00. The fee will be donated directly to the charity to help the RUH continue to provide the high quality care for all its patients treated and cared for across the Trust.  The client will also be able to request that the fee is donated to a specific area of the hospital, which may have a special meaning to them, their family or friends.

Making a Will is one of the most thoughtful and important things you can do to protect those you love; yet it is surprising that the Wills of fewer than half of the population are up to date. Knowing that your partners, family and friends will be looked after when you die, is reassuring and offers great peace of mind and security for you and them. Having a Will prepared professionally can also help avoid any confusion over your intentions and ensures your estate and possessions can be distributed as you wish. Whatever your age, making a Will, ensures that your assets (house, savings, business etc), are distributed to the people and causes in accordance with your instructions. It will also make it a lot easier and quicker for your executors & beneficiaries to administer your estate.

John, a supporter of The Forever Friend Appeal, was delighted to take the chance to make a Will and help his local hospital last September when the scheme was launched for the very first time. He says “My Wife and I have been putting off updating our Will for some time.  We like to support the RUH’s charity when and where we can.  When I saw the information about RUH Will Month, it made us do something about it. The participating solicitor we chose gave excellent legal advice and everything was explained simply and clearly. Thanks to this wonderful scheme, we not only have peace of mind that our Will has been written professionally and our affairs are in order; but we have also had the opportunity to support our local hospital which has given us great care over the years, and continues to provide long-term specialist treatment”.

Jan Witt, In Memory & Legacy Officer, The Forever Friends Appeal, says, “Some of the best and worst days of our lives will be spent in the Royal United Hospital. By taking part in the Will writing scheme and putting your own affairs in order, will not only help your loved ones in the future, but also the patients, family and their friends cared for by the RUH.” The scheme was extremely successful last year raising a fantastic £33,000 towards the care and treatment of our patients across all areas of the hospital. We hope that this important Will Writing scheme will continue to go from strength to strength and the general public will come on board and give the same fantastic support again.

Jan Witt continues “We are enormously grateful and absolutely thrilled with the number of solicitors who are generously giving their time for free again and providing the public with affordable Wills in support of the RUH to help continue its valuable work it does, it is truly appreciated!

Appointments with the solicitors can be booked from now for September.  Details of participating solicitors can be found here or for an information leaflet, please contact Jan Witt on 01225 825819 or email jan.witt@nhs.net.

Nick Blackwell backing Forever Friends corner

The Forever Friends Appeal are excited to announce that former middleweight boxing champion Nick Blackwell will be joining their running team for the 2017 Vitality Bath Half Marathon, to thank staff at Bath’s Royal United Hospital for the treatment he received earlier this year.

The 25 year old from Trowbridge will take on the race on behalf of The Forever Friends Appeal, the primary fundraising charity at the Hospital, to raise much needed funds for Helena Ward – the ward that cared for him during his recovery process, in the wake of what was to be his last professional fight back in March.

Nick Blackwell was forced to retire from his boxing career after suffering a swelling on the brain during his defeat to Chris Eubank Jr in March this year. Nick briefly “died” on his way to hospital in London where he was placed in an induced coma after suffering bleeding on the skull. After receiving treatment in London, he was transferred to the RUH in Bath and now wants to say thank you to the doctors and nurses who looked after him.

Nick says, “Running the Bath Half is the least I can do after everything the RUH has done for me – the staff on Helena Ward are amazing. They’re saving lives every day. I want to raise as much money as I can as thank you for all their help.”

Helena Ward is a Neurology ward with a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and support staff who work collaboratively to deliver care to their patients. The ward treats a wide range of patients from the age of 18 upwards with complex disorders relating to the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve, and muscles caused by neurological conditions or acute trauma and delivers rehabilitation, which played a huge part in Nick’s recovery.

Rosie Lloyd, Senior Sister on Helena Ward says, “We are incredibly grateful to Nick for choosing to fundraise in support of patient care on Helena Ward.  We hope to use the funds raised by Nick’s Half Marathon run, to put towards the funding of a special outdoor therapeutic space, where patients on Helena Ward are able to relax and also carry out their therapy as part of their initial rehabilitation.”

The Forever Friends Appeal are now calling for as many people as possible to join their running team, and Nick, to run for patients at the Hospital…you can choose to support an area that is close to your heart. Events Fundraiser for The Forever Friends Appeal, Laura Pearce comments:  “We are so excited that Nick has chosen to be part of our team in the Vitality Bath Half – affectionately known as “Ted’s Team”! Nick has such an inspiring story of recovery and overcoming odds; and is such a positive person. It’s great to see that he is so motivated to take on this challenge for the ward that cared for him – running 13.1 miles will definitely be a change of pace! He’s a brilliant ambassador for the RUH. The Vitality Bath Half Marathon is a really special event with an exceptionally scenic route for participants. We have a number of charity places in the race, so if you’d like to join Nick and support patients at the RUH please sign up and join our amazing team!”

The popular race, located in the historic city of Bath, will take place on Sunday 12th March 2017.

Silver Bond places for The Forever Friends Appeal are now available and can be purchased at on our Bath Half page here for £35, with a pledge to raise a further minimum sponsorship of £175. Runners can choose to raise funds for any ward or department at the RUH that is close to their heart, or the Cancer Care Campaign which is fundraising towards the build of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the Hospital. If you already have a place in the race but would still like to be part of the team supporting patients and their families at the Hospital, please get in touch – the Appeal would love to hear from you!
