State-of-the-art new equipment marks milestone for Cancer Care Campaign

New state-of-the-art medical equipment has been introduced to the Royal United Hospital’s Cancer Care Campaign.

The Forever Friends Appeal raised £650k towards a new Computed Tomography Simulator (CT Sim) that will allow for more complex radiotherapy treatment for the RUH’s cancer patients.

CT Sim1

The charity and the RUH held a small reception for the official opening of the new equipment, joined by guest of honour, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Anne Maw.

The new CT Sim will replace a simulator that is 10-years-old and significantly out of date.

CT Sim is a process used to determine the exact location, shape and size of tumours which need to be treated.

Images are obtained to create a virtual 3-dimensional image of the patient so that radiation treatment can specifically target cancerous tissues.

Before the arrival of this new equipment, hundreds of RUH cancer patients who needed a CT scan for the most complex radiotherapy planning had to go to the Oncology Centre in Bristol to get their images.

The new Sim was delivered to the RUH site in March 2016 and is now fully operational helping patients across the RUH’s catchment area.

Its main home will be in the new Cancer Centre where the equipment will be re-located in 2020.

Sue MacGregor, RUH radiotherapy service manager said: “My whole team are delighted with the new CT Sim machine which will help so many of our patients with cancer. Thank you to everyone for your support.”

Kind-hearted 9 year old walks for RUH patients and animals in need

Ellie Gold, of Wellow nr Bath, isn’t your average nine year old… she’s been keeping busy over the summer holidays organising a sponsored walk, that she’s been determined to take on with family and friends. Thoughtful Ellie is interested in helping local people with cancer and also loves animals, so decided to walk to raise funds for The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign and the Humane Society UK.

After pouring over maps and plenty of training walks, Ellie decided to take on a 7 mile route starting at the Royal United Hospital, through the two tunnels, before finishing in Wellow which she completed last Sunday 18th September. After a little nervousness at the thought of not being able to complete the whole route, Ellie set off at some pace and really got into the swing of things… before reaching the finish line much earlier than expected! With every step taken on the carefully planned expedition, Ellie has raised an incredible £500 for the charities!

Ellie says, I wanted to raise money for cancer patients because two of my friends Mum’s have had cancer. Also my Dad works at the hospital and he looks after patients during their operations. He told me how the new Cancer Centre would really help provide better care for the patients. Mum helped me to plan the route and starting at the Hospital seemed to be a good idea.”

Ellie’s fundraising will go towards the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, which has a target to raise a minimum of £8.5 million towards the build of a world class new Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The existing Cancer and Haematology Department at the RUH is a collection of 1940’s single storey buildings, hurriedly erected to house injured service personnel during WII. Thanks to new research and the ongoing development of treatment, cancer care itself and the team of staff delivering it has changed phenomenally over the last seventy years. The Oncology team do an amazing job providing a very high level of care but the current facilities they operate in are no longer fit for purpose and do not compliment the modern medicine that is being delivered on a daily basis – the unit now treats well over 2200 new patients each year, over a wider age range and for longer periods of time with many more surviving and living with cancer. With the help of amazing fundraisers just like Ellie, the campaign has raised over £7.5 million towards its target and will go a long way towards making the new Centre world-class.

Laura, Events Fundraiser for the Appeal comments: “What a way to spend your summer holidays! We are so impressed with how Ellie has thought up, and planned this walk all by herself to help others in need. Everyone at the RUH is so grateful for all her hard work and fundraising efforts– with Ellie’s help we will be able to transform cancer care, and make our patients time in Hospital just that little bit better.”

Ellie also used her walk to raise money for the Humane Society UK, who protects animals from inhumane treatment and suffering. She loves animals and thinks they should be treated with respect. Having decided to before vegetarian four years ago (at the age of 6), Ellie loves the Humane Society’s campaign to get everyone to consider having a Meatless Monday, and is something that most schools have now adopted.

Box Rocks festival raises thousands for new cancer care unit

Rockers in Box enjoyed more than nine hours of music under the bank holiday sun as the annual Box Rocks festival returned for its 23rd year.

The annual event, which is hosted by The Queen’s Head in one of Wiltshire’s smallest villages brought in sell out crowds for the festival which raised £3,645.98 for the Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care campaign.

Organiser Dean Creighton said: “It was absolutely fantastic. I was just running around all night but it was a great show and the weather was great! If the sun comes out, then everyone comes out so the charity were really happy. ”

Bands Caravaggio, All Ears Avow, Flower Pot and Phoenix Club graced the stage at The Queen’s Head along with Hip Route, The Bohos and the Hat Club while The Corporations played a tribute to the late David Bowie and Prince.

Mr Creighton said: “The bands were really good and I have already got the bands booked for next year and they are absolutely fantastic bands who I really like and who I think other people will like. It is all about giving them a good professional stage for up and coming bands in the area which is what we try to do.”

In previous years, the event which is usually a sell-out has raised more than £28,000 for units and wards at Bath Royal United Hospital and the pub landlord is delighted that they have smashed this year’s target.

He said: We emptied the charity bottle on the bar this morning and it had £510 in it alone so I knew we would smash the target and bring our total fundraising figure up to £30,000.

“It was quite a sad day too as in the previous 22 years, we had a gentleman called Gordon Hall who sat on the door every year with the charity staff helping them collect the money and he would always be the person at the end of the night opening the bar bottle and counting how much was in there. Sadly Gordon passed away earlier this year so we gave him a shout out and a big round of applause.”

Although the show is over for another year, the staff the Queen’s Head are still packing up and preparing for another bank holiday bonanza in the near future.

Burohappold launch Teds Big Bake Off schools competitions

Local firm and proud sponsor of Ted’s Big Bake Off 2016, BuroHappold Engineering, have launched two competitions, exclusively for schools, to help encourage further support for The Forever Friends Appeal’s popular annual fundraising week for Bath’s Royal United Hospital.  The competitions include a ‘Decorate a Cake for Big Ted Competition’, as well as an ‘Engineering futures competition’ with the chance to win a 1 hour interactive schools workshop, run by engineers from BuroHappold.

2016 is the first year that the local firm have sponsored Ted’s Big Bake Off, and the Appeal are delighted that the company are getting so involved with the fundraising activities.

The first competition, open to children age 7 and under, is inviting pre-school and nursery children to have fun decorating their very own cake stencil.  Kids are being encouraged to be colourful and creative in order to be in with the chance of winning a £50 Waterstones Gift Card for themselves, as well as £100 in book vouchers for their pre-school / nursery, courtesy of BuroHappold Engineering. The deadline for entries is Friday 7th October , with the winner being announced at the end of the Ted’s Big Bake Off week on Friday 21st October.  The winning child will also receive a visit from popular Appeal mascot Big Ted to present the prize.  For competition rules, please visit www.tedsbigbakeoff.com

Two lucky schools are also being offered the chance to win an exclusive 1 hour interactive schools workshop, run by engineers from BuroHappold. During the workshop, students will learn all about what it means to be an engineer. BuroHappold engineers will then lead one of two exciting activities in which the pupils will have an opportunity to be an engineer. Simply register to take part in Ted’s Big Bake Off to be in with the chance of winning, and get busy fundraising for the RUH. Winning schools will be announced between 24th October and 21st November 2016.  For competition rules, please visit www.tedsbigbakeoff.com.

Duncan Ker-Reid, Associate at BuroHappold, comments:  “The interactive workshops will introduce students to how engineers are changing the world and show that the problem solving at the very heart of engineering can be exciting and fun.”

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Common, comments:  “We love it when our corporate sponsors get involved with our fundraising activities, in addition to financially supporting the event.  These two school competitions are a great way of helping to engage local school children with our fundraising for Ted’s Big Bake Off – it gives them the chance to win some great prizes, whilst having fun raising money for their local hospital.”

The Forever Friends Appeal is the charity for the RUH and Ted’s Big Bake Off is the annual fundraising week for the hospital. Last year, thousands of people across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire took part in the event and raised over £20,000 to help transform care for patients and their families at the RUH. This year, the event is taking place between Monday 17th and Friday 21st October 2016. Along with their well-known ambassadors “The Fabulous Baker Brothers” of Channel 4 and Hobbs House Bakery fame, the Appeal are now inviting individuals, schools, businesses and community organisations to pre-heat their ovens, prepare their mixing bowls and get baking to support either the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, or a ward or department of their choice at the Hospital. Whether it’s holding a bake sale or hosting a bake off competition at work, school or with friends and family, you can help raise some serious dough to help transform care for patients and their families.
