Santander’s Bath branch takes on Brownsword Challenge

Santander’s Bath Branch has taken on ‘The Brownsword Challenge’ for The Royal United Hospital’s (RUH) charity The Forever Friends Appeal. The banks’ branch staff have chosen the Appeal as their Charity of the Year and is fundraising for the Appeal’s campaign to help build a new RNHRD and Therapies Centre at the RUH.  This Brownsword match funding challenge means every pound raised by the bank will be matched by The Brownsword Charitable Foundation.

As well as supporting two National charities, each Santander branch is also given the opportunity to support one charity, local to their community.  A staff vote from the Bath-based team chose The Forever Friends Appeal and they are therefore busy planning fundraising for the year ahead.  The team are planning to organise a big event each quarter, along with smaller fundraising activities throughout the year. They have already lined up a Quiz night in the Santander Bath branch in May, along with a staff cycle ride, riding the distance of Bath to Santander in Spain on an exercise bike in July!

David Hawkins, Branch Director at Santander’s Bath Branch said:  “The team and I are so excited at the prospect of making a contribution to such a worthwhile cause,  our branch is committed to playing a key part in the community and hope to have some fun over the coming year raising as much money as we can. It’s great because any funds we do raise will be matched by Santander.”

The Appeals’ new RNHRD and Therapies Centre Campaign aims to raise over £2 million to support the building of a new, state-of-the-art Centre at the RUH. Each year over 70,000 patients are treated by the RNHRD and Therapies team. This purpose-built facility will provide treatment, care and education for patients to recover from episodes of illness or injury, or to manage their long-term condition. The new Centre will ensure patients receive the best possible treatment and care in a building which is fit for purpose.  It will include state-of-the-art equipment, a therapeutic environment and a brand new hydrotherapy pool.

The Brownsword Charitable Foundation have set a ‘Match Funding Challenge’ to help achieve the Campaign target.  ‘The Brownsword Challenge’ will match £1million worth of donations from the public and other donors, to help raise the £2million for the new Centre.

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Common comments: “We are absolutely thrilled that the Santander Bath branch has chosen us as their charity of the year, and are so pleased to have their support in helping us to fundraise for the new RNHRD and Therapies Centre. The services provided will make a huge difference to the thousands of patients who are treated each year. We’re really looking forward to working with, and getting to know the team over the year ahead!”

Chalmers HB Accountants to walk a marathon

A team of colleagues from Chalmers HB Accountants in Wells have chosen to take part in The Forever Friends Appeal’s Walk of Life to say thank you to the Children’s Department at Bath’s Royal United Hospital (RUH).  In 2016, a member of the Chalmers team lost both her grandchildren to SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy).  Sonny passed away in April 2016 age 7 months, and his sister Sienna two weeks later, age 22 months.  The team chose to take part in the event to raise funds for the Children’s Ward that played an important part in the care of both children.

The team of 27 colleagues from Chalmers HB have entered the Walk of Life Corporate Challenge taking place on Saturday 13th May, and participants will be walking either the full 26.2 mile marathon challenge along the Kennet and Avon canal from Bishops Cannings to Bath, or joining the event for 10 miles in the afternoon from Bradford On Avon to Bath.

Company Director for Chalmers HB, Caroline Bannell, comments“The events of last year touched all our hearts and when the opportunity came up to support the hospital and improve our fitness at the same time, the whole team were keen to sign up.  This is quite a challenge for a bunch of accountants who spend 5 days a week sitting behind a desk! ”

The walk is organised by The Forever Friends Appeal – the primary charity for the RUH who raise vital funds for all wards and departments at the hospital.  Every year the Walk of Life sees hundreds of people across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire walk along the Kennet and Avon Canal from Bishops Cannings to Bath, raising funds to help transform patient care at the RUH. 500 participants have signed up to join the Walk of Life, with everyone choosing to fundraise towards a ward, department or Campaign of their choice.

Corporate Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Jo Common comments:  “Everyone who takes part in the Walk of Life has a different reason for wanting to support the charity.  It is lovely to see the team at Chalmers all come together to take on this challenge to show their support for their colleague and their family, after what must have been such a difficult year.  We are really grateful to have their support in raising money towards state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities for the Children’s department.”

Legendary Glastonbury festival founder Michael Eavis CBE has become an Ambassador for the Walk and will therefore be attending the start of the route in Bishops Cannings to greet walkers before heading on their way.

Once again the Appeal are thrilled to be working with Kier Construction on the event, who have sponsored the Walk of Life for the past 3 years and who are also working in partnership with the RUH Bath NHS Trust on the redevelopment of the hospital site.

Dan Wagstaff, Cardiac Ward Manager commented: “Cardiac Ward would like to express their huge thanks to the Elizabethan Lodge for their generous donation.

“The money donated will directly help the cardiac ward with its long term plan to provide even better patient centered care through providing advanced training for the Cardiac team.”
