In 2020/21, no matter what part of the “Cumberwell” area you come from, we’ve all cause to be grateful for the NHS and to our local hospital the Royal United Hospital. Therefore the club Captains chosen charity is “The Forever Friends” appeal which enables them to show their heartfelt appreciation of both.  With over six months of my term already gone we’ve decided that we’ll have this one week dedicated to raising funds for the charity.

The NHS and RUH mean a lot to Tony Kujawa not only because of  the care and vital treatment it’s provided to his family and friends, but also because his youngest daughter, Rachel, is a Senior Sister and Emergency Nurse-Practitioner at the RUH.  She follows in the footsteps of her Grandma and Auntie as a third generation NHS nurse.

The programme is still being added to, but here’s a taster.

  • Buy a Nurse a cuppa” – When you buy a drink or food this week Cumberwell will invite you to show your appreciation to these fantastic people and buy them a cuppa for £1.  All proceeds go directly to the appeal.
  • Grand Draw – Nearer the time, we’ll invite you to buy a “ticket” for a Grand Draw for a cornucopia of fantastic prizes.  No need to bring cash pay “contactlessly” when you’re at the club or phone reception and they’ll enter your membership number into the draw.  For non-members we’ll allocate special numbers.
As a thank you to members, when you enter the GRAND Draw not only will you get a chance to win a great prize. But if you get a 2 [i] on any of the Par 3s between the 3rd and 11th July you’ll get a “golden ticket” into a separate draw for a new driver.
  • GOLFATHON – Thursday July 8th.  Responding to a challenge I’m going to try to break my record of 72 holes in one day, which I did a couple of years ago for my charity. You can sponsor me per hole, Stableford point or simply donate to show support.   Ali James is helping me organize this event and he is arranging for “prestigious” partners to play with me for each of the 9-holes. We’ll be setting up a Just Giving fund-raising page and I’ll send out details soon.
  • Captain’s Trophy Competition – Saturday 10th. More details to follow.
  • Captain’s Fun-day -Sunday 11th.  A team event with many quirky elements.

The club are also planning to offer an NHS medal to the winners of the Captain’s Trophy, Ladies, Seniors and Juniors’ events that week,  They’ll also have the opportunity to compete against each other for an NHS Trophy.
