8 hour Bikeathon Challenge

Bath Sports and Leisure Centre is thrilled to be hosting the fifth year of the eight hour Bikeathon Challenge on Saturday 14th September. Spinners will be motivated to get on their bikes and spin fast to raise funds for The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign and registered charity Aquaterra, who manage the leisure centres in Bath and North East Somerset in partnership with the local council.

An eight hour Bikeathon, takes up the same amount of time as a 9-to-5 desk job, but instead these keen cyclists are working hard to push their legs to the limit, to help those affected by cancer. Participants can choose from a minimum two hour slot up to the maximum eight hours.

Over the last five years Bath Sports and Leisure Centre has raised over £7,000 for the Appeal and are delighted to continue to support their local acute care hospital.

50% of the funds raised at the Bikeathon will be donated to the RUH Cancer Care Campaign and the 50% will be invested in Aquaterra’s innovative targeted projects and services. The Appeal is raising £8 million towards a new pioneering Cancer Centre at the RUH. The hospital will be taking the same successful holistic approach, as with The Dyson Centre for Neonatal Care (NICU), which will dramatically improve the patient ‘journey’ and experience, as well as providing a state of the art Cancer Care facility that is truly fit for purpose.

This 33% / 66% partnership between the Appeal and NHS, will fund this £23.5 million capital project, which is scheduled as a phased build between 14/15 – 17/18.

The RUH currently treats 2000 new patients with cancer a year and in the future, along with an ageing population, this is going to increase. The demand for a new pioneering Cancer Centre is essential to help transform the cancer experience for the RUH patients and their families.

The Bikeathon team will be cycling outside the front of the Bath Sports and Leisure Centre with Big Ted there to keep them entertained. Fitness instructors will also be urging the team on and guiding them through the day.
