Charity shop raises £20,000 in first year

We are very pleased to announce that in just one year H.U.G.S. Charity Shop “Help us Give Support” has raised an incredible £20,000 for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign. It has been an incredibly successful year for H.U.G.S, which is managed by Mandy Fletcher & Mary-Ann Benson and staffed by wonderful volunteers.

Zoe Tainton, the Community Fundraiser at The Forever Friends Appeal comments: “We are forever grateful to the shop Managers; Mandy & Mary-Ann and all the fantastic volunteers who keep the shop running. It has been an absolute pleasure meeting each and every one of you, we are so grateful that you came to us over a year ago to say you wanted to support us and set this charity shop up. It has been such a successful year for you all and you deserve the best recognition for all your hard work and kindness. Just think….all those endless hours spent ironing, folding clothes, sorting through donations, creating beautiful displays…it has all paid off! Your generosity has not only benefitted the local community; by bringing a fabulous charity shop to Chelsea Road, your funds will also make a huge difference to the new Cancer Centre and most importantly your funds will benefit the patients and their families in our community.”

Mary-Ann and Mandy comments: “From the bottom of our hearts, we are truly thankful to our incredible volunteers, our friendly customers and kind donors who have made this shop what it is today. We have met so many inspiration, selfless, kind hearted people, who have been so supportive and made our dream to bring a new charity shop to Bath, come true. Most importantly, we are so pleased to do something positive and raise funds for such a worthy cause. The RUH is such a huge part of so many people’s lives and each one of us has been touched by cancer in some way or another. It is great to be part of such an exciting project and we looked forward to the day we can open the doors with The Forever Friends Appeal and feel proud to know we helped to build this for all the patients and the families around us.”

To celebrate the momentous occasion; H.U.G.S. hosted an ‘Open Celebration Party’ on Tuesday 20th May. The occasion was also a combined launch event for the start of the new Bath ‘BAB’ Fundraising Group supporting The Forever Friends Appeal. The night was a huge success as supporters and members of the public arrived to show support their support for the cause and the popular charity shop in Chelsea Road.

The Forever Friends Appeal are inviting members of the public to join the new Bath ‘BAB’ Community Group, to help raise funds for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign. Whether you are looking for a project to fill the long summer nights, meet likeminded people, or do something positive in your community the Appeal would love your help.

The Forever Friends Appeal is currently focused on the RUH Cancer Care Campaign – raising £8.5 million towards the build of an exceptional new Cancer Centre at the hospital. “BAB” stands for Be a Brick, as the aim of the new fundraising group is to raise as many bricks, rows and walls as possible to help build this new Centre.

The ‘Be a Brick’ scheme has given individuals, companies and groups the opportunity to ‘Be a Brick!’ and ‘Buy a Brick, a Row or a Wall’ to help raise funds towards the new building. In return for purchasing a virtual brick at the cost of £10 each, donors receive a ‘Be a Brick’ certificate and acknowledgement letter. Donors who wish to purchase a virtual ‘Row’ for £100 or ‘Wall’ for £1000, will also be acknowledged within the design of the new Cancer Centre. In just over one year, the Appeal has raised over £120,000 from the ‘BAB’ scheme – incredible! Despite its success, with the campaign target set at £8.5 million, the scheme continues in earnest.

Zoe Tainton, Community Fundraiser continues: “I am very excited about this new Bath BAB Group, it is such a great opportunity to do something positive for the people of Bath. In one way or another, most of us have been affected by cancer. Together we can care for cancer, and help transform the cancer services for the patients and their families at our general district hospital. The aim is to meet once a month for a fun, casual drink and to combine our efforts to raise awareness and put the ‘fun’ in fundraising by organising activities and events in Bath which will raise the much needed funds we need for this Cancer Centre. We welcome anyone who wants to help ‘beat cancer’! ”
