A variety of cars, old and new, experienced the need for speed and a taste of track action all for a good cause last Thursday 16th April. The second charity track day of its kind at Castle Combe Circuit raised over £5,250 for its selected beneficiary charity, The Forever Friends Appeal at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
The track day gave drivers the opportunity to experience speed in their own cars, in a controlled environment, at one of the longest established and famous motor circuits in the UK. The concept of these fundraising track days is fondly referred to as ‘fun with a purpose.’ Where automobile self-abuse is out and enjoying your car, the track experience and the bigger picture is in.
On the day, cars ranged from a 1963 Aston Martin and Maserati Biturbo to BMW M3, Porsche 911 and several Lotus Elise’s. Passenger rides were also popular for those wanting the chance to ride in a car of their dreams, in exchange for a donation to the charity.
Maria Fisher from Castle Combe Circuit comments: “I’m so pleased that we can yet again help contribute towards this worthy cause and of course a big thank you must go to the track day organiser, Christopher Darwin, to offer us this great opportunity to choose a local charity especially as I still visit RUH for regular check-ups after my major operation in 2013.”
The days fundraising will go towards the RUH Cancer Care Campaign which is raising £8.5million, contributing vital funds to the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the Royal United Hospital in Bath. This Centre will be a pioneering building, focused on an individualised and holistic approach to the treatment of cancer patients, where every part is designed around the needs of patients with different forms of cancer as well and their friends and family who visit them. It will transform care for local patients and their families in Bath, Wiltshire and Somerset and even further afield.
Over the years, these ‘fun with a purpose’ track days have raised over £100,000 for a variety of good causes at circuits around the country.
Laura Pearce, Events Fundraiser for The Forever Friends Appeal, says:
“We are thrilled that Castle Combe Circuit chose to support The Forever Friends Appeal for a second year in a row with this fantastic track day. As a hospital serving over 500,000 people across Bath, Somerset, Wiltshire and even further afield, supporting the RUH is a local cause that touches the hearts of so many – including motor-enthusiasts! In 2014 they raised over £3,000 so to beat that total the second time around, with an incredible £5,250 is amazing! We hope all of the drivers and passengers thoroughly enjoyed their day on this world-class track– thank you Castle Combe Circuit!”
