Epic 10 hour Spinathon to raise money for Cardiology Ward

Locals Rob Walsh and Tash Hillier are organising an epic ‘Spinathon’ which will see 50 teams of intrepid spin cyclists cycle for 10 hours solid in aid of The Forever Friends Appeal, the primary charity at Bath’s Royal United Hospital and the British Heart Foundation.

These causes are very close to the organisers’ hearts as Rob Walsh explains:

“Last June I lost my brother, Neil, unexpectedly through a heart attack.  As you can imagine this was a devastating loss for me and my family.  But what is very important to me is to turn this tragedy into something positive.

Having found out that my Spin Class Instructor Tash Hillier experienced the loss of her father last year as well, also through a heart attack, we hatched the idea of a 10 hour ‘Spinathon’ never done before in the Bath area, to raise money both for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Cardiac and Intensive Care Units at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, where our loved ones were treated.”

The organisers are aiming to raise £10,000 in vital funds, both to support the work of the incredible teams at the hospital and also to help further heart research.  And their Spinathon idea has really taken off since they discussed holding a modest event initially!

Rob continues: “The Spinathon will be held on Saturday 5th March 2016.  It will last 10 hours, from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm and we are holding it in the centre of Bath, at Southgate Shopping Centre.

Our plans have grown and we have now secured 50 spin bikes for the event and brave locals are ‘buying’ each of the bikes and putting teams together to cover the time period.

We are aiming to raise a total of £10,000 through the event to be split equally between BHF and the hospital units”

Rob is also looking for local businesses to sponsor a bike at the event, something which will not only contribute to the target funds but also benefit businesses through some handy promotion:

“We are offering the chance for businesses to sponsor a bike. For business owners who would like to do this, it costs £100 and their business logo will appear on their sponsored bike.

After the event they will also get a picture of their bike being ridden during the event for your own promotional experiences.”

Businesses wishing to sponsor a bike can do so by donating £100 via the event giving page:

Emily Lynch, Events and Community Officer at The Forever Friends Appeal says: “We are incredibly grateful to Rob and Tash for putting on such an incredible event to raise funds for the RUH Cardiology Unit. Every penny raised at the Spinathon will go towards transforming care for cardiology patients at the hospital. Please do come along and support the event on Saturday 5th March – Big Ted will be there cheering the team on!”
