Former patient makes a giant leap to thank hospital staff

Skydive

A former patient has taken to the skies to fundraise for the Royal United Hospitals Bath where she received emergency treatment. Denise Dale bravely jumped 10,000ft out of a plane, raising over £700 for the hospital’s charity The Forever Friends Appeal.

Denise Dale, from Chippenham said, “Everyone has a lockdown story, this is mine – at the start of the lockdown, I like many others had decided to do a bit of fitness, clear out the cupboards and clean the house from top to bottom. Until one morning, ready to do my Joe Wicks workout, I collapsed with severe abdominal pains.

“After a visit to the GP I was referred to the RUH. Tests revealed a mass in my pelvis and I had to undergo an operation, which included removal of the mass and a hysterectomy. Thankfully my outcomes are good, though I know this is not the case for so many others.

“Throughout my treatment, the staff at RUH went above and beyond to make me feel safe and reassured. They were my shoulder to lean on when I was all by myself.

“During my recovery I decided I wanted to give something back to the wonderful people in the gynaecology department who cared for me and I decided to set myself a personal challenge. As they are challenged every day, jumping out of a plane seemed like a good idea. My motivation comes from all the incredible people I have encountered during a crazy few months in my life.”

Denise was due to take part in the sky dive on 20 November, however following the news of a second lockdown, she grabbed the opportunity to jump before the restrictions came into force.

Laura Cherry, Events and Community Coordinator said, “A huge, heartfelt thank you to Denise for embarking on this amazing challenge to raise funds for the RUH. What an incredible achievement and such a wonderful way to thank the staff who cared for her at the hospital.

The funds that Denise has worked so hard to raise will touch the lives of so many people at the hospital and will make a real difference.”
