Saturday 17th May 2014, will see over 250 fundraisers take to the canal towpath to raise funds for The Forever Friends Appeal at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. The Walk of Life, proudly sponsored by Kier Construction, is an annual 21 mile walk along the Kennet and Avon canal from Devizes to Bath. Last year over £38,000 was raised from the event, and this year organisers’ are hoping to surpass last year’s fundraising total. The Walk is raising funds to help build a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the hospital.
Setting off from Devizes Wharf at 9am, people will have chosen to walk either the full 21 miles to Bath, 12 miles in the morning from Devizes to Bradford-On-Avon or 9 miles in the afternoon from Bradford-On-Avon to Sydney Gardens in Bath. Passers-by are being encouraged to look out for the Walk of Life participants on the canal and cheer them on as they tackle the beautiful, but challenging 21 mile route.
This is the first year that Kier Construction have sponsored this event and they are looking forward to getting staff members involved with walking and marshaling along the route. David Snell, Director of Kier Construction said; “We are really proud to be involved with the Walk of Life and many of our staff will be involved on the day. Walkers will see me dispensing refreshments from my barge “Penelope” – she will be sailing the canal between Bradford on Avon and Bath”.
Walkers have signed up from all across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire. Many have taken part in the event before, but for others this is the first year that they have taken on the challenge. Walkers this year includes several teams taking part in the Corporate Challenge, as well as a team of staff members from the William Budd Ward at the RUH. Forever Friends Appeal volunteers and Kier staff will be positioned at various locations along the route cheering walkers on and keeping them supplied with refreshments.
Many people are taking part in the Walk with family and friends to celebrate the lives and memories of their loved ones. The Walk of Life started in 2008, having been created with and in memory of an inspirational lady called Vanessa Kyte, who passed away in 2007 having lived with cancer for seven years. Vanessa’s sister Nicola Noble is leading the 2014 Walk of Life and is determined to help turn Vanessa’s dream of a new Cancer Centre for the hospital into reality.
One in three people are affected by cancer and everyday lives are changed by this disease. The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign is raising £8.5million towards the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre. This Cancer Centre will be a state-of-the-art building, with every part designed around the needs of patients with different forms of cancer. It will transform care for patients and their families at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. Walk of Life sponsors, Kier Construction, are pleased to be working in partnership with the RUH Bath NHS Trust on the redevelopment of the hospital site.
Events & Community Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Emily Lynch, comments: “We are so looking forward to the Walk of Life this year. Each year the event gets bigger and bigger raising even more funds for the hospital. All our walkers have been working really hard training and fundraising over the last few months, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their truly incredible support and dedication!”
