Since launched in 1999, Mendip Golf Club Captain’s Charity Day has raised over £160,000 for various good causes. This years’ event was held to raise funds for the Forever Friends Appeal who are looking to build a new Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. The day was blessed with fine weather and through the efforts of the large dedicated Team of Club members who offered their support, the day was a huge success for the Charity and for all those that took part.
36 teams of 4 competed and during their rounds they were treated to a barbeque on the 10th and a special competition run by the club Professional, Kevin Pitts, on the 17th. In all 19 prizes were won by Teams and Individuals. The most famous faces appearing were playing in the Team sponsored by previous Head Green keeper Richard Flower and captained by Club Member Andy Jones. They were jockeys Carl Llewellyn, winner of two Grand Nationals, Mick Fitzgerald winner of the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup and recently retired A P McCoy multiple winner of all the major races and winner of over 4,000 races in all. Very capable golfers they are as well!
The main winner of the day was of course the Charity. Community Fundraiser Lydia McGivern was lucky enough to attend the event and see this fantastic club in action. At the end of the evening, Club Captain Martin Wilkins presented The Appeal with a cheque for £8,500, a phenomenal sum made possible by the generosity of sponsors and the many people and organisations who made donations.
However, the Charity were not the only winners. A Team sponsored by Alan Nash of R H Windows stood on the 12th Tee and jokingly agreed to share the sponsored prize should one of them achieve a hole in one. 176 yards uphill with the pin on the back of the green was a daunting challenge but Micky Currell , a Wells Golf Club Member proved up to it and picked up the prize sponsored by Wellsway BMW and MINI of Bath. A £13,800 Mini! Not a bad prize even if it had to be shared with his Teamates! Needless to say the packed Clubhouse saw some exuberant celebrations throughout the evening!
