Pig Race raises £2,300 for RUH Cancer Centre

The Warminster and District RUH Community Group’s next fundraiser – the renowned ‘Pig Race Night’ will take place on Saturday 30 June at The George in Longbridge Deverill, near Warminster.

Earlier this year, their pig race – which uses fluffy toy pigs, not real ones, raised an incredible £2,300 by the Warminster and District RUH Community Group joining forces with Frome Town Rotary Club in Beckington Village Hall.  The funds raised have since been donated to our Cancer Care Campaign.

The Pig Race was a fantastic fun night. The evening started with the toy pigs being  auctioned off to the crowd and other race goers followed by placing a wager on the pigs. The event comprised five races, each consisting of five contenders – eager to be crowned the olym-pig champion! We had over 80 people up on their feet with anticipation – cheering on their pig to make it to the finish line.

Annie Hickmott, Chair of the Warminster and District RUH Fundraising Group said:

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone, including local companies that sponsored the event. Frome Town Rotary put on a brilliant evening and we were thrilled that they asked us to bring our infamous ‘ Pig Racing ‘ to their first fundraising event and to support a cause which we are so passionate about.”

Fundraising in the fight against cancer never stops. The Appeal continues its Cancer Care campaign to ensure that the very best care, treatment and quality of environment are available for patients and their families at the RUH. Lauren Noble, Community Fundraiser, The Forever Friends Appeal said:

“I am continually amazed by the generosity and goodwill of the public at all of our community fundraising events. The Warminster and District Fundraising Group’s commitment to the Cancer Campaign and their positive and fun-loving attitudes inspire individuals in our community which make the Pig Race Nights such a success.

“It was wonderful to work with Andrew and The Frome Town Rotary Club to plan such a fantastic event and I’m excited to see what is in store for the future.’’

Andrew Lee, President of Frome Town Rotary said:

“The Pig Racing night was great fun and we were very pleased with the amount of money we were able to raise.  One of our members had recently lost her father to cancer and most of us have lost friends or family to cancer, therefore, the prospect of having a pioneering Cancer Centre in our area is well worth supporting.”
