Over 300 members of the local community attended the Rode Autumn Ball on Saturday 11th October 2014 to raise funds for two local causes. The glamorous event, organised by the Rode Ball fundraising committee, has raised an incredible £21,000 – £11,282 for the Royal United Hospital’s Forever Friends Appeal and £10,000 for The Friends of Rode School. This is the second Rode Ball organized, the first being held in October 2012.
Guests were greeted with champagne and canapés on arrival at the fire themed black tie event. A fire performer and magician entertained guests as they made their way to the marquee, kindly sponsored by Southwest Marquees. Champagne then flowed, as dinner was served by ‘A Bit of A Do’ Catering Company.
Following dinner both Mrs Carolyn Tommy, Head teacher of Rode School and Mr Jeff Manning, President of The Forever Friends Appeal, spoke to guests about the importance of the nights fundraising for each charity. The Forever Friends Appeal is currently raising £8.5million towards the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the RUH. Mr. Manning’s speech was then followed by a few words from a former patient of the RUH who, having had recent successful treatment for stomach cancer, shared his incredible and moving story with guests.
Guests then had the chance to bid at a spectacular auction, which included lots donated from many generous companies and individuals including a week in Palm Springs, tickets to the Graham Norton show and a signed 50th anniversary Red Arrows flying suit. The evening then culminated in everyone being entertained by local Bristol Band, Soul Strutters and Alex Fell, DJ from Bespoke DJ Events. The dance floor was never empty and the fun continued with the arrival of a London Black cab photo booth and bucking bronco. This, in conjunction with the Vodka Ludge Ice Sculpture, provided much entertainment for the rest of the evening.
Kelly Jupp, Member of the Rode Ball committee comments: “As a committee we would like to thank all the local businesses and organisations who supported the event either through sponsorship or donations to our raffle and auction. The night was a huge success and we are thrilled that we managed to increase the amount we raised in 2012. We were privileged to be awarded the Forever Friends Appeal Community Partner Award in 2012 and to be able to donate a further £11,282 to the Forever Friends Appeal and £10,000 to the local school is just fantastic”
The Forever Friends Appeal would like to thank Rode Ball committee for raising such an incredible amount to go towards the Campaign for a pioneering new Cancer Centre. Jeff Manning is proud to have started The Forever Friends Appeal 16 years ago and is now Hon President. Speaking after the Rode Ball he said: “This was a truly fabulous occasion. The hard working Rode committee did a brilliant job of planning such a big and glittering event. It was a pleasure and a privilege for me to represent our Cancer Care Campaign.”
