Most people have a list of things they would like to do by the age of 40. This can be known as a ‘bucket list’ – it is a really fun opportunity for you to do things you have always dreamed of but never got round to doing. The average list can be doing small and silly things like; holding a monkey, and some can be a once in a life-time, huge challenge.
For Dan Calway of Bristol, at the age of 39, his dream is to climb the highest free standing mountain in the world. On Sunday 14th July 2013, five days after his 39th birthday, Dan will be ascending up Mount Kilimanjaro to the summit which is an impressive 5895m above sea level!
Dan, who owns Calstone Construction ltd, wanted to do the climb to support a cause close to his heart, so he decided to raise money for The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. His motivation and inspiration came from his mother and friend, Mark Hucklebridge, who have both suffered from cancer and were treated at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
One of Dan’s inspirations has been Mark Hucklebridge, aged 34, a Motocross British Champion, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and treated at the RUH. Since his diagnosis, Mark has given his time to The Forever Friends Appeal by running the Bath Half marathon, fundraising at the annual Marshfield Motocross Club’s Good Friday Race Day and supporting the Appeal’s BE A BRICK scheme. This scheme encourages everyone to buy a virtual brick for £10, row for £100 or wall for £1000. Brick supporters will receive a certificate, together with an acknowledgement of their chosen name within the design of the new Cancer Centre.
Dan Calway says: ‘’I can’t believe what started off as an idea, will soon be happening. This trip has been a whole year in the planning and training has been hard. As part of my training I took part in a Half Iron Man, which really pushed my fitness to the limits, so hopefully I will make it to the summit.’’
Dan continues: ‘’I wanted to raise money for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign, as I have seen my mother and one of my friends suffer from cancer so, I am hoping my fundraising will help raise some awareness, to help others in the future.’’
Mark will be taking on the challenge with his two friends, Mike Porter & Kevin Wright, as part of a team of eight. They leave for Tanzania on Sunday 14th July and make the climb up Kilimanjaro 2 days later.
Zoe Tainton, Community fundraiser for the Forever Friends Appeal says: “We are very grateful that Dan is climbing Kilimanjaro for the sake of his mother and Mark, who have both been affected by cancer. What a positive thing to do for people who you care about. I have no doubt he will have the time of his life- good luck Dan! ”
